Route details for Stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California are announced. That stage of the tour takes cyclists from Seaside to Paso Robles.
Thursday morning, tour officials announced that on May 19th, cyclists will leave Seaside and head south to Paso Robles, mostly utilizing Highway 1 through Monterey, Carmel, Pacific Grove and Big Sur.
Cyclists will then turn off of Highway 1 to Santa Rosa Creek Road, and then take it to Highway 46, Vineyard Drive and Peachy Canyon Rd. “The climb up over the San Jacinto Mountain via Santa Rosa Creek Road will be tremendous. We look forward to showing the world some of the fantastic roads for cycling that exist in the Paso Robles area,” said Andrew Messick of AEG Sports, in a press release. The stage will end on Spring St. in downtown Paso Robles.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with the choice of route; it really highlights the best of Paso Robles - beautiful scenery, friendly wineries and roads that offer challenging cycling,” said local organizing committee chair, Lisa Solomon. Solomon says tour organizers have received great support from the local community.
“It’s always exciting to announce the route details for our race, but this year seems especially exciting given the diverse and challenging course that has been put together for the cyclists,” Messick said.
As an added bonus, the Amgen Tour of California’s Stage through Paso Robles coincides with the Paso Robles Wine Festival. Special engraved bottles of wine will be presented to the cyclist who wins Stage 5 of the Tour.
